長保3年(1001年)、井王三郎直久が湿地帯の開墾中に熊野の神から教えを受け、池と「兜石」が現れたことに由来する。その日から兜石をご神体とし、屋敷神を神社へと移行した。以来、千年以上にわたり井王家が神職を担っている。
