A temple of the Myoshin-ji school of Shingon Buddhism located in Ogori City, Fukuoka Prefecture, commonly known as the "Frog Temple." It enshrines a standing statue of Nyoirin Kannon (the Medicine Buddha's female aspect) as its principal image, one of only two such standing statues in Japan and the only one housed in a temple.
History
Founded in 729 CE by the monk Gyoji by imperial decree from Empress Koken. The temple declined in the early Edo period but was revived by Arima Tadayoshi, the lord of Kurume Domain. It was later restored again with support from the Matsuza domain and local residents. In the seventh year of the An'ei era (1778 CE), Arima Tsunayoshi, the lord of Kurume Domain, designated it as the eighth station of the Chikugo Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage.
