History

The temple was founded in 1616 CE (Genna 2) by High Priest Nichiei of Honkakuin as a hermitage. It originally enshrined Daikokuten, a statue made by Saicho as a guardian of the Lotus Sutra, and later became independent from Honnyuji. In 1969, the main hall and Daikokuden were destroyed by fire but were subsequently rebuilt.
