Myohonji Main Hall
鎌倉市大町1丁目15−1
This is a head temple (Reiseki temple) of the Nichiren sect and is also recognized as a component cultural asset of a Japanese Heritage site. It features one of the largest wooden hip-and-gable roofed main halls in Kamakura, covered with tiles.
History
Nichiren founded the temple in 1260 CE (Bun'ō 1). He established the Hokkedo hall to honor the souls of his father, Nōin, and his mother, at which time the temple's name was decided. After Nichiren's death, Nichirō succeeded him, and the temple flourished as the base of the Hekiga Valley lineage. However, it was closed during the Tenpō Reforms and was later elevated to the status of a Reiseki temple.
