Established in 1321 CE (Genko 1) when Nichizo received temple lands from Emperor Go-Daigo, Myokenji was the first full-scale Nichiren sect temple in Kyoto. In 1334 CE (Kenmu 1), it became an imperial temple and was officially recognized as a sect. After suffering repeated destruction, including damage from followers of Mount Hiei and fires during the Tenmon Hokke War, the temple was relocated to its current site by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
