The date of founding is unknown. This area was formerly part of Himeshima, one of the Nanba Hachijima (Eighty Islands of Naniwa). According to the Setpu Fudoki (Geographical Records of Settsu Province), there is a theory that this site corresponds to the pine grove of Himeshima where a goddess fled from Silla. In 1872 (Meiji 5), it was designated as a Kosha (village shrine). In 1910 (Meiji 43), the Hanakawa Shrine from Sagashima was merged here, but Hanakawa Shrine regained its independence in 1924 (Taisho 13).
