Founded in 761 CE (Tenpyo Hoji 3) to pray for the safe delivery of an empress. Although most of the shrine was destroyed in the Great Fire of Hachioji in 1897 (Meiji 30), it was subsequently rebuilt several times. Minamoto no Yoritomo planted a boat-shaped zelkova tree while praying for victory in battle, which is why the area has been known as Funamori (Forest of Boats) since ancient times.
