It is said to have been founded in 587 CE (Yomei 2) by the monk Sonryu. After falling into disrepair, it was restored in 806 CE (Doto 1) by the monk Seien, based on an imperial edict from Emperor Heisei. In 837 CE (Jowa 14), Ennin established the Komyo Mantra Society, and the temple became affiliated with the Tendaishu sect. In 1393 CE (Meitoku 4), the current temple grounds were established. Following damage from warfare and fires during the Sengoku period, the temple was restored through the efforts of the Mori and Matsudaira clans, as well as its devotees.
