Mushouji Temple

Originally a temple of the Shugendo sect on Mount Iou, it converted to the Jodo Shinshu during the Sengoku period. It is the successor to the former branch temple of Matsudera Eifukuji, which served as the eastern head temple (Touhou Shokuto) for the Toyama Domain. After Eifukuji relocated to Toyama, the remaining branch temple developed into the current Mushouji. During the Edo period, it was in conflict with Eifukuji over its status, but became an independent temple following the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism and Shinto) movement in the third year of the Meiji era (1870).
