Initially named Shin'ankoku-ji, it was later renamed Shoryu-zan Soyu-ji, taking its mountain name from Kanamori Shigeyori's dharma name and its temple name from Kanamori Shigekatsu's dharma name. It is said that Tetsugoro Yamagata studied Zen here in the late Edo period.
