History
In 717 CE (Yoro 1), Gyoji is said to have built the main hall and carved a statue of Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) to found the temple. Later, the monk Ganjo Shonin revived the temple. In 1460 CE (Kansei 1), Ashikaga Yoshimasa established the Seven Halls and Kalandas, and the monk Yuchin Wajō became the restorer. During the Edo period, the temple received a patent of 20 koku from Tokugawa Iemitsu and prospered as one of the seven temples of the Kanto region.
