Founded by the Grand High Priest En'ei and the weaver Tominaga Oribu to ward off evil from the northeast direction. In 1873 (Meiji 6), the Rishi Gakusha school was established, serving as the region's educational center until 1909 (Meiji 42). The main buildings were destroyed in the war in 1945 (Shōwa 20), but the main hall was rebuilt in 1964 (Shōwa 39).
