Founded in 1271 CE (Bun'ei 8) when Kira Mitsushige invited Eini (Shogoku Shoshi) from Tohokuji to establish it as the family temple of the Kira clan. In 1541 CE (Bunmei 10), it was transferred to the Myoshin-ji school. During the early Edo period, the Kado (guest quarters) were rebuilt thanks to the efforts of Torii Mototsune. Large-scale repairs were carried out in the Meiji era, and in recent years, restoration and renovation work on the Kado has been ongoing.
