Miyagi-ken Kokugoku Jinja (Miyagi Prefecture Patriotic Shrine)

〒980-0862 宮城県仙台市青葉区川内1

4.2(1143)

Located on the site of the Honmaru (central bailey) of Sendai Castle, this shrine enshrines war dead and martyrs related to Miyagi Prefecture. It is also one of the five shrines included in the 'Sendai Gosha Meguri' (Five Shrines Pilgrimage of Sendai).

History

Founded in 1904 (Meiji 37) on the site of the Honmaru of Sendai Castle, it was established to enshrine those who died during the Russo-Japanese War and other martyrs. In 1939 (Showa 14), it was designated as a Kokugoku Jinja (Patriotic Shrine) by the Minister of Home Affairs. During the post-war occupation period, it was renamed 'Miyagi Jinja', but in 1957 (Showa 32), it reverted to its current name and was rebuilt using the former shrine buildings of Kazunomiya, a sub-shrine of Ise Jingu.
