A temple of the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism, Mizokoin is listed as the Daikokuten (god of wealth and abundance) of the Musashi-ku Kawaguchi Seven Lucky Gods and as the 87th site of the Musashi Province 88 Pilgrimage Sites. The principal image is a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva of Longevity, believed to have been created by the Great Master Jikaku Daishi.

The founding date is unknown, but it is said to have been revived and opened by the priest Eikai Ho-in. The temple received a certificate of 11 koku in land grants from Tokugawa Hidetada and held the status of a medium-sized head temple with many branch temples in the vicinity. During the Meiji era, the gate of the Shimazu family's Edo residence was relocated and installed as the mountain gate.
