Establishment was approved in 1912 CE (Meiji 45) as the Toyama Ken Chokonsha (Toyama Prefecture Soul-Calling Shrine), and construction was completed the following year in 1913 CE (Taisho 2). It was renamed Toyama Ken Kokoku Jinja in 1939 CE (Showa 14). The shrine buildings were destroyed in the Great Toyama Air Raid of 1945 CE (Showa 20) but were rebuilt in 1954 CE (Showa 29). In 1966 CE (Showa 41), it was added to the list of designated shrines under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
