It is said that the shrine was founded in 1627 CE (Kan'ei 4) on the site then known as Eitai Island. The surrounding sandbar area was reclaimed to create the shrine grounds and residential areas for parishioners. During the Edo period, it received generous protection from the Tokugawa shogunate, who revered Hachiman Daimyojin as the clan deity of the Minamoto family. At the time of the Meiji Restoration, it was designated as a Jun-koku-sha (a shrine receiving imperial decrees).
