The shrine's origins trace back to the Jomon period. It is said to have begun when Emperor Suinin ordered Mibitadokihime-no-Mikoto to build the 'Palace of the Sun.' During the reign of Empress Jito, it was granted the status of 'First Shrine of the General Guardian of Echigo Province.' From the Heian period onward, it underwent multiple relocations, finally moving to its current location in the Bunsei era. Subsequent expansions led to the completion of the current vermilion-painted grand hall.
