Empress Jingū obtained Buddhist relics from Baekje and hid them in a mound. Later, the monk Gyōki excavated them following a spiritual dream. A monastery was then constructed by imperial decree of Emperor Shōmu. The temple was destroyed by fires during the Tenshō period and in 1840 CE (Tenpō 11), but was subsequently rebuilt.
