History
Founded in 768 CE (Shinji 5) by Taisho on Mount Kotani, it was later renamed Joso-ji. It was revived in 1426 CE (Eiyo 33) by Keishun. In 1429 CE (Eikyo 1), it received an imperial plaque from Emperor Go-Hanazono, becoming an imperial prayer temple. In 1516 CE (Eiyo 13), it was relocated to the Kotani Castle town by Asai Suke-masa, and its name was changed to Kotani-ji.
