History
The shrine originated in 1780 (An'ei 9) when the Ise-kō, a guild of wholesale drug merchants, enshrined a branch spirit of Sukunahikono-mikoto from Gojō Tenjinsha in Kyoto, praying for safety in medicine and prosperity in the drug trade. Sukunahikono-mikoto was enshrined together with Shennong Yandi. During the Tappei Heihachirō Rebellion in 1837 (Tenpō 8), the guild hall was destroyed by fire, so the deities were moved to a newly built shrine hall in 1840 (Tenpō 11). In 1906 (Meiji 39), it was decided to continue as an independent shrine, and a formal consecration ceremony was held in 1910 (Meiji 43).
