The shrine is said to have originated in 901 CE (Engi 1) when Sugawara no Michizane rested at the foot of Mount Onaga, and local villagers built a small shrine for him. In the early Edo period, the Asano clan invited Matsuo Tadamasa to relocate the shrine to its current location, where it was named 'Onaga Tenjin-gu'. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, it became the current 'Onaga Tenmangu'.
