The shrine originated in Meiji 2 (1869 CE) when Ikeda Masamasa, the lord of the Bizen Domain, conducted a soul-summoning ceremony for those killed in the Ou War. Construction of the shrine buildings began in Meiji 11 (1878 CE), and the site was relocated to within Okichi Park in Meiji 16 (1883 CE). The shrine buildings were completed in Taisho 4 (1915 CE). In Showa 14 (1939 CE), it was renamed Okayama Sengen Shrine. Currently, rituals are performed to console the spirits of the war dead.
