In 1217 CE (Kenpō 5), the deity Michitomo no Mikoto was enshrined, and Tenjin Shrine was established in Kitano Shō. In 1690 CE (Genroku 3), Sugawara no Michizane was added to the enshrinement, and the shrine was renamed Okazaki Tenmangu. Following the Meiji Restoration, it was separated from Sōjini-ji Temple in accordance with the order separating Shinto and Buddhism.
