According to tradition, in 815 CE, Kukai discovered sacred water at this site and enshrined a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), marking the temple's origin. It is also said that when the farmer placed the Yakushi Nyorai statue carved by Saicho on a washtub, the temple came to be known as 'Tarai Yakushi' (Washtub Medicine Buddha). In 864 CE, it became a temple under the direct administration of the imperial court (Teigaku-ji). The Eastern Courtyard began when Ono no Komachi stayed there to treat her skin disease.
