Founded in 721 CE (Yoro 5) by the monk Tokudo, it is said that the monk Goki created and installed an image of the Eleven-Faced Kannon. During the Kamakura period, the temple received land donations from Minamoto no Yoritomo, and records note that Minamoto no Sanetomo and others visited the temple. It was later revived in 1591 CE (Tensho 19) by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
