In 1759 CE (Ho-rei 9), a branch spirit from Ema-zan Tenmangu in Kamakura was enshrined here, and a small shrine was built at the current site on the eastern hill. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism after the Meiji Restoration, the shrine was transferred from the jurisdiction of Shinko-ji Temple to Iwazu Village as a shrine of devotion without local parishioners. After a fire in 1879, the main hall was rebuilt with the support of industrialist Hattori Chokichi, and the Hattori family has since inherited the priestly duties.
