From the medieval period onward, the indigenous Japanese water deity Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto and the beliefs associated with Takaza Shrine merged through the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism (Shinbutsu-shugo) to form the current enshrined deities. During the Edo period, it gathered the devotion of people from Osaka as a deity for commercial prosperity.
