According to tradition, in the 40th year of Emperor Keikō's reign (the 12th emperor), Yamato Takeru enshrined Shinatohiko Mikoto as a deity to calm the winds, following the last will of his sister, Princess Tachibana. Later, Emperor Keikō enshrined the spirits of Yamato Takeru and Yamatohime Mikoto together with the main deity. In the first year of the Gankyō era (857 CE), the shrine was granted the rank of Shōgo no ge (Lower Fifth Rank) and the military rank of Kun Go-tō (Fifth Rank of Merit).
