Founded in 1240 CE by the monk Sankai on Mount Yokozan in Dazaifu, the temple was relocated and re-established in its current location in Chiyomachi, Fukuoka City, in 1600 CE by Kuroda Nagamasa. It received protection as the ancestral temple of the Kuroda clan, and the grounds contain the graves of the clan's founder and successive lords, including Nagamasa. Although the temple fell into disrepair due to the Meiji-era Haibutsu Kishaku (anti-Buddhist movement) and the 1945 Fukuoka air raids, the graves were restored after the war.
