静寂の中にたたずむ禅寺。明朝の建築様式を取り入れた門、巨大な釜、仏像がある。

朱色の建物や細やかな彫刻が施された建築には、長崎らしい異国情緒が漂います。国宝の大雄宝殿や第一峰門など、中国の様式を取り入れた歴史的な建造物が並びます。境内はそれほど広くありませんが、ランタンフェスティバル等の行事では賑わいを見せます。本堂へは石段を上る必要があり、拝観料は本堂手前の賽銭箱へ投入する形式です。
