In the 6th year of Empress Suiko's reign, a branch spirit was enshrined from Usa Hongū (Usa Grand Shrine) in Buzen Province. Later, during the Kōhei era of Emperor Go-Saion, the shrine buildings were constructed by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, the governor of Iyo. After repeated destruction by fire and subsequent restorations, the current shrine buildings were newly built on Kamejima Island in the first year of the Keian era. During the Meiji era, the shrine was designated as a Gōsha (village shrine) and a Kenja (prefectural shrine), and it continues to this day.
