History
The founding date is unknown, but it is said to be far older than the Sumiyoshi Shrine that once stood in this area. In 1685 CE (Jōkyō 2), the Sumiyoshi Shrine was enshrined as a secondary deity (sōden). However, after the shrine buildings were destroyed by four major fires, the shrine was relocated to its current site. In 1919 CE (Taishō 8), Hime Shrine and Suwa Shrine were merged into it.
