The shrine originated in 1479 (Bunmei 11) when Oda Nobuna enshrined a branch spirit from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu as a guardian deity of the west during the construction of Edo Castle. It was relocated to its current site during the Edo period and revived with the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu and Keishoin. Although the shrine buildings were completely destroyed in the air raids of 1945, the current structures were rebuilt in 1962.
