The temple originated from a thatched hut established in 1321 CE by Nichiin, a disciple of the Mahāyāna school, in Ōabe Village. In 1584 CE (Tenshō 12), it was relocated to Sawara and renamed Hōsenzan Jōshō-ji. In 1984 CE, it was moved to its current location due to highway construction.
