Originally an Okumiya (inner shrine) and Sessha (subordinate shrine) of Kihi Jingu (Kihi Grand Shrine), it took the name 'Tsukumiya' in connection with a divine oracle from Empress Jingū. In 703 CE (Daihō 3), six deities, including Empress Jingū, were enshrined together. The shrine was revived in 941 CE (Chōwa 4) by the Tendai monk Enshū. The current shrine name and its reading were established in 1868 CE (Meiji 1).
