Originally the Okumiya (inner sanctuary) and Sessha (subsidiary shrine) of Kotohira Gongu, it was named 'Tokomiya' in reference to a divine oracle from Empress Jingu. In the 3rd year of Taiho (703 CE), six deities including Empress Jingu and Emperor Chouai were enshrined together. It was revived in the 4th year of Chōwa (1015 CE) by the Tendai monk Enshū Sōjō. The current shrine name and reading were established in the 1st year of Meiji (1868 CE).
