Jofukuji Temple
相模原市南区新戸2516
A temple of the Kenchoji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, bearing the mountain name Honkyozan. Its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha). Within the temple grounds stands a Camphor tree (Tabunoki), estimated to be 400 years old.
History
Founded in 1316 CE (Showa 5) by Sugawara Nagahira, who invited Honkaku Ryodo from Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura to perform memorial rites for his grandfather, Sugawara Nagaada. Although the temple later declined, it was revived by Gyuso Chin, a monk from Shinano Province.
