The shrine's origins are said to date back to when Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jimmu, rested here while traveling to Aso, where he set up offerings and enshrined the heavenly and earthly deities. During the Engi era, Tomonari, the head priest of Aso, constructed the shrine buildings. In the first year of Tenyo (1154 CE), Tomotaka combined the worship of the Twelve Deities of Aso, establishing the shrine as the chief guardian of the Ono district. The current shrine buildings were renovated in the fourteenth year of Kyoho (1729 CE) by Hosokawa Nobunori.
