It is said that Hie Shrine was enshrined as a guardian deity within the grounds of Tokoin Temple. Following the Order for the Separation of Buddhism and Shinto, it became independent as Hie Shrine. In 1909 (Meiji 42), it merged with the local Jinmeisha, Mizusha, and Inarisha shrines. The following year, it was renamed Hirayama Shrine, and in 1911 (Meiji 44), it further merged with Itsukushima Shrine and Asama Shrine.
