It is said to have been founded in the Asuka period by Prince Shotoku on the orders of Emperor Yomei, and later revived in the Heian period by the nun Juichi. The temple was destroyed by fire during the Araki Murashige Rebellion in the Tensho 6 year (1578 CE) but was rebuilt in the Edo period.
