It is traditionally said to have been founded in 814 CE (Kounin 5) by Kukai. During the Tensho period, the temple was destroyed by fire in a military campaign led by Chosokabe Motochika. It was later rebuilt in the Kyoho period (1716–1736 CE) by the priest Shoshun Ajari. The name Byoudouji (Temple of Equality) derives from a prayer for the equal happiness of all people through sacred water and the equal salvation of all sentient beings.
