Takeisao Shrine is one of several shrines established to honor domain founders, a trend popular from the late Edo period through the early Meiji era. In 1869 CE (Meiji 2), the shrine was granted the divine title 'Ken-Oda Shrine'. In 1870 CE (Meiji 3), a branch shrine was established at the summit of Mt. Maizuru. The main shrine was then relocated to its current site on the slopes of Mt. Maizuru in 1884 CE (Meiji 17). It was designated as a Prefectural Shrine in 1873 CE (Meiji 6).
