This Zen temple was founded in 1253 CE (Kencho 5) by Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura Shogunate. Although the original structures were lost to the Kamakura earthquake and repeated fires, major buildings were newly constructed or relocated during the Edo period with the support of the Tokugawa clan.
