The founding date is unknown, but it is said to have been established during the reign of Emperor Go-Hanazono in the late 12th century. During the Tensho period, the shrine buildings were burned down by vassals of the Shimazu clan. The shrine was destroyed again by a fire in 1912 (Meiji 45) and was rebuilt in 1913 (Taisho 2).
