The temple is said to have originated from Gohou-ji, built during the Nara period by the monk Giki to enshrine the spirit of Teganare. During the Heian period, Kukai established the monastic complex and renamed it Kobo-ji, after which it converted to the Tendai sect. In the Kamakura period, it accepted Nichiren's teachings, converted to the Nichiren sect, and designated Nichiten as its founding patriarch.
