History
The shrine's founding is marked by the establishment of a divine temple in front of Emperor Ojin's tomb in 559 CE (Keimei 20). It is renowned as the oldest Hachiman Shrine. In 1045 CE (Eisho 6) of the Heian period, the enshrined deity was transferred to its current location. Repairs and reconstructions were carried out by Minamoto no Yoritomo and Toyotomi Hideyori. During the Meiji era, the buildings of the associated Buddhist temple (Jingūji) were demolished due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism.
