三千院の正門であり、高い石垣と城郭を思わせる堅牢な造りが特徴です。石組みは野面積みで、厳かな雰囲気を醸し出しています。門の階段を登り、左手にある受付で拝観料を支払います。車椅子やベビーカーを利用する場合は、南門から入るルートが推奨されています。
