History
Founded in 1694 by the monk Yuukai, the temple was popular among commoners during the Genroku period as one of the 'Three Riches of Edo.' Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji Restoration, the original temple, Kimi-in, was abolished, and the site was re-established as the current Shinjo-in. The grounds feature a spring called Yanagi-no-I (Willow Well). The temple is also nicknamed Kamenoko-ji (Turtle Child Temple) due to turtles that were released into the well starting from the Genroku period.
