Founded in 1616 by Yoingen-in, the wife of Yoshiyoshi Kikkawa, the lord of Iwakuni. Originally located in Yatchohori-machi, Chuo Ward, it was relocated to its current site in 1633. It once had branch temples named Kage-mado-in and Seiju-in, but these have since been integrated into the main temple.
